Red Shirt Program

What is a Red Shirt?
What is a Red Shirt?
The Red Shirt Program is designed to give high school students unprecedented access to the inner-workings of the hospital system. As a Red Shirt, you will be paired with a college-level mentor who will help you learn about what it takes to succeed in college and what it means to work in health care. You will see how the hospital runs and will assist with delivering food trays, picking up specimens from the lab, transporting and discharging patients, and much more!
As a Red Shirt, you will serve one four-hour shift each week for a minimum of six months. At the end of your commitment, you will accumulate 72 hours of volunteer service. Many departments are open to Red Shirts and days and times range from 7am to 10pm. Scheduling is done on a first-come-first-serve basis. Before you begin volunteering, you must attend a mandatory two-day training session, where you will learn hospital safety, medical topics and how to find your way around the hospital. Once you pass the training exam, you will be a Red Shirt!
In order to be successful in the Red Shirt Program, you must be a self-starter and a motivated individual. The golden rule of the Red Shirt Program is this: You will get out of this program what you put into it- if you jump in and work hard, you will be in store for an amazing experience!
By participating in the Red Shirt Program, you will gain experience in the health care field and mentor under a college student to learn how to be successful in college. Additional events will be scheduled such as a college application workshop, mock job interviews, resume building workshops and many more. For Red Shirts who successfully complete the program, eligible Red Shirts can apply to receive a Letter of Recommendation.
